Community Health Program

Overview
OLPS health programs are implemented within the context of HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS is global pandemic that has permeated societies and distorted the social fabrics thereby impeding social and economic development. The pandemic continues to pose tremendous challenges to the healthcare system in Kenya. HIV/AIDS spread in Kenya peaked in the 1990s, with prevalence rates of as high as 20-30% recorded in certain areas of the country especially Nyanza and Rift Valley provinces where OLPS' activities are concentrated. Concerted efforts by the government and non-state actors dwarfed the trend to reach current level of 6.5%.

Rural communities and households bears the greatest burden of the pandemic, and abject poverty that characterize many households in rural and slum set-ups presents people with a challenge of how to distribute their less than a dollar daily earning to cater for all of their needs (i.e. education for their children, food and nutrition, clothing, shelter among others). The result is that many of their basic needs are unmet including medical care for HIV positive individuals.

OLPS has over the years come in to bridge the gap that exists between majority of the rural poor and urban slum dwelers betwen the need for medical care and access. The organization mobilizes financial resources to enable access of medical services among these people both at OLPS Clinic and at the community level. Currently, these programs are implemented through technical and financial assistance from the Elizabeth Glazer Paediatric AIDS Foundation. Other partners who have worked with OLPS in implementing these programs in the past include Community Habitat Finance-CHF, Elton Johnís AIDS Foundation-EJAF, and Clinton's Foundation.
